Hardwood Stair Refinishing for Existing Wood Steps
A staircase is small but slow. Fixr explains the higher per-step price by the extra corners and tight spots, which make the sanding, staining and coating take longer. Big floor sanders don't fit on a tread, so most of the work is detail sanders, scrapers and hand blocks. Replacing worn treads or turning carpeted stairs into wood is a different job, covered on Hardwood Stairs.

Hand-Sanding Treads and Nosings
The tread's flat center can take a small orbital or detail sander. The rounded nosing, the inside corners against the stringers and the joint where tread meets riser are scraped and sanded by hand. That's where the hours go. Worn nosings can need the most sanding of anything on the stair. Ask the refinisher to show you a finished nosing before the whole run is done.

Stained Treads Over White-Painted Risers
Stained treads over painted risers give you a wood walking surface and risers you can simply repaint when shoes scuff them. The order matters: wood first, then tape, then paint, or the reverse, with crisp tape lines either way. If the risers carry old paint in a house built before 1978, EPA rules require certified lead-safe work when a paid crew disturbs it. Many Torrance homes date from those decades; what the rules require is on Hardwood Floor Removal.
Matching Stair Color to a Refinished Floor
Stairs and the floor around them read as one surface from the landing. If the floor is being sanded and stained, do the stairs in the same job with the same stain batch and topcoat. Stain makers tell finishers to always make a sample; on stairs, ask for one on the back of a tread or a closet step. Sheen counts too: a satin floor next to glossy stairs looks mismatched even in the same color. Color choices are on Hardwood Floor Staining.
Handrail and Baluster Touch-Up
A handrail's finish wears where hands slide along it. Rails and balusters are refinished by hand: cleaned, scuffed, spot-stained and recoated. Some flooring contractors do this and some leave it to a painter or finish carpenter, so ask before you assume it's in the per-step price. Replacing a rail is carpentry and may fall outside a flooring contractor's license class.

Why Torrance homeowners call Torrance Wood Flooring
- Free to call or use the form; the referral costs you nothing
- Your request goes to one independent contractor, not a bidding list
- Ask for a moisture reading and a written line-item estimate
- California caps the down payment at 10% or $1,000, whichever is less
Stair Refinishing Cost per Step
| Item | National guide range |
|---|---|
| Refinishing per step | $25 to $85 (HomeGuide) |
| Refinishing per step | $25 to $45 (Fixr) |
| 13-step staircase | about $325 to $1,105 at HomeGuide's range |
The spread follows the work: closed or open stringers, bullnose starter steps, painted risers, a landing, and whether stain goes on. Ask for the landing as its own line, since it's floor area, not a step. New treads cost far more per step and are covered on Hardwood Stairs.
Planning Around a Staircase You Can't Use
When the only stair leads to the bedrooms, drying time is the real constraint. On one waterborne finish's data sheet each coat dries in 2 to 3 hours, the floor takes foot traffic after 24 hours, and full cure is 3 days. Stain adds its own wait; dark tones can need 12 to 18 hours before the first coat. Plan where everyone sleeps on coating day, and keep socks on and pets off for the first days. Other finishes and their cure times are on Hardwood Floor Finishes.
