Parquet Work: Repair, Resanding and New Floors
Parquet is wood floor made of short pieces set in a geometric pattern. Fixr describes it as built from wood shorts and recommends an experienced installer for the detail work. Fixes to an existing floor come first below, then new floors.

Resetting Loose and Missing Parquet Blocks
Parquet blocks are laid in adhesive, so a block that rocks or clicks has lost its bond. The fix is to lift the loose pieces, clean off the old glue, and set them back in fresh adhesive the flooring maker approves. Missing pieces are cut from matching wood. Two things to settle before the regluing:
- Why it let go. If the floor sits on concrete, a moisture test tells you whether damp is lifting the blocks; see Hardwood Floors Over Concrete.
- What the old glue is. One flooring maker warns never to sand or scrape old asphaltic "cutback" adhesive because it may contain asbestos. Get it tested first; Hardwood Floor Removal explains how.
HomeGuide lists board or section replacement at $5 to $20 a sq ft, and says board repairs take 3 to 5 hours per room on average.

Resanding Parquet Where the Grain Changes Direction
A strip floor gets sanded along its length, with the grain. Parquet can't be, because neighboring blocks point different ways and some are always crossways to the machine. That makes parquet slower to sand than plain strip. In our view, sanding marks are best judged on a stained test patch before the whole floor is colored, so ask for one, and ask the refinisher how they sand parquet and what grit they finish on.
National guides put refinishing at $2 to $8 a sq ft and 2 to 6 days for the job; Hardwood Floor Refinishing has the full process, and Hardwood Floor Finishes the topcoat choices.

New Solid Parquet in Block and Basket Weave
New solid parquet goes down piece by piece or block by block in adhesive. From NWFA's parquet chapter:
- Layout: square-edge blocks and basket weave can start from a wall; more intricate patterns usually have to be centered on the room.
- Expansion: at least 1/2 inch around the room and at every fixed object.
- Fastening: glue is the norm, though some 3/4 inch parquet can be nailed if the pattern leaves a tongue to nail through.
- Subfloor: parquet can't go straight onto old solid-board subfloors; they need an underlayment layer first.
HomeGuide puts true parquet at $13 to $40 a sq ft because of the cutting and layout. Long-slat zigzag patterns are covered separately on Herringbone Floor Installation.
Prefinished Engineered Parquet Tiles
Pre-made parquet tiles come as square panels with the pattern already assembled. HomeGuide says they are easier and cheaper to install than true parquet, at $10 to $16 a sq ft. The trade-off is less freedom: you get the maker's pattern and finish, and when the tile has an engineered core, its thin top layer limits how often it can be sanded (see Engineered Hardwood Refinishing). Engineered cores also carry a formaldehyde emissions label; see Engineered Hardwood Installation.

Why Torrance homeowners call Torrance Wood Flooring
- Free to call or use the form; the referral costs you nothing
- Your request goes to one independent contractor, not a bidding list
- Ask for a moisture reading and a written line-item estimate
- California caps the down payment at 10% or $1,000, whichever is less
Repair, Refinish or Replace an Old Parquet Floor
How we'd think it through:
A few loose or missing blocks, the rest sound
reset and patch, then refinish if the patches stand out. This is the cheapest route.Worn finish, gray traffic paths, blocks tight
a full sand and refinish, priced like any refinishing job. Many blocks loose across the room, or a damp slab under it
fixing piece by piece stops making sense. Test the slab, then price new parquet or another wood floor against the repair.Old black adhesive underneath
whatever you choose, test it before removal or sanding starts.
Before signing for any of these, check the contractor's license; Hardwood Floor Repair explains how.
