White Oak Flooring in Torrance, CA

Torrance Wood Flooring pairs your home with a flooring contractor who lays and finishes white oak, whether you want flat-sawn, rift and quartered, or live-sawn boards.

  • Boards alone: $6 to $12 a sq ft per HomeGuide, $3.75 to $7 per Fixr; labor comes on top
  • Timeline: most floors under 1,500 sq ft go down in 1 to 3 days, plus 2 to 3 days if the oak is finished on site
  • Hardness: 1,350 lbf on the Janka scale, against 1,220 for red oak
  • Cut: flat-sawn is the cheapest; rift and quartered cost more and move less across the width

Say which cut you like and roughly how many square feet. The contractor phones you to book a look at the rooms.

White Oak Cuts and the Looks They Give

Same tree, different saw pattern. How a mill slices the log decides the grain you see, how much the boards shrink and swell across their width, and the price per square foot.

Flat-Sawn White Oak With Cathedral Grain

Flat-sawn (plain-sawn) boards are the arched, flame-shaped grain most people picture when they hear "oak floor." HomeGuide calls it the most common and economical cut, and one hardwood retailer says that, grade aside, it costs the least of the three. The catch is movement: the same retailer says plain-sawn moves the most, and NWFA notes that quartered and rift boards are more stable in width. Flat-sawn is also the cut that comes widest, according to one mill, which is why it dominates wide plank floors.

Rift-Sawn and Quartersawn White Oak

These cuts turn the growth rings on edge.

  • Quartersawn: rings at 45 to 90 degrees to the face. White oak's medullary rays, which NWFA says can run four or more inches tall in oak, show as shiny flecks across the board.
  • Rift-sawn: rings at about 30 to 60 degrees. Tight, straight lines with little fleck; HomeGuide notes the angled cut takes longer at the mill.
  • Sold together: mills often bundle them as "rift and quartered."

Both cost more than flat-sawn because, as one mill puts it, quarter sawing takes more time and yields less wood from each log. What you get back is a floor that changes less in width from season to season, so the gaps between boards stay smaller.

Live-Sawn White Oak Planks

Live-sawn boards are cut straight across the log in one direction, bark to heart, so one floor mixes flat, rift and quartered grain, according to a mill that sells it. The same mill says the method wastes very little of the log. Expect more knots and character than a clean rift floor. To us it is a middle path for anyone who finds rift too uniform but wants more fleck than flat-sawn gives.

Natural, Fumed and Reactive-Stained White Oak

White oak carries more tannic acid than red oak, one retailer notes, and that is what fuming and reactive stains work on. One flooring maker explains that reactive stains have no pigment: they react with the tannins and sugars in the wood and give two-tone color that ordinary stain cannot copy. That variation is the appeal. It also means a board replaced years later may not come out the same shade, so keep a few spare boards from the original lot. The topcoat itself, water-based, oil-modified or hardwax oil, is its own decision; see Hardwood Floor Finishes, and for pigment stain colors, Hardwood Floor Staining.

White Oak Against Red Oak and Other Species

Hardness is measured by the Janka test: the force needed to press a 0.444 inch steel ball halfway into the wood. Figures from The Wood Database, with material prices per square foot from the national guides:

Species Janka (lbf) Boards only, HomeGuide Boards only, Fixr
Black walnut 1,010 $8 to $14 (walnut/Ipe) $8.25 to $10.50
Red oak 1,220 $5 to $10 $3 to $5.75
White oak 1,350 $6 to $12 $3.75 to $7
Hard maple 1,450 $4 to $12 $6.25 to $10
Hickory (pecan) 1,820 $6 to $14 $4.15 to $7.15

White oak is about 10% harder than red oak, a difference you notice under dog claws more than under socks. Fixr also rates white oak as the more water-resistant of the two. The bigger practical question in an older house is matching: if the existing floor is red oak strip, new white oak beside it reads as a different wood. The Wood Database describes red oak as slightly redder and white oak as more olive. Weaving new boards into an old floor is covered on Hardwood Floor Repair.

What to Pin Down Before Ordering White Oak

  • The cut by name

flat, rift, quartered, rift and quartered, or live-sawn.
  • The grade

one retailer sells white oak in Select and Better, #1 Common, Character, #2 Common and #3 Common.
  • Solid or engineered

over concrete, engineered can be glued or floated while solid needs a plywood subfloor; see Hardwood Floors Over Concrete.
  • The finish system by product name,

and a finished sample board on your own floor before the whole room is coated.
  • Acclimation

white oak needs time in the house before it goes down; Hardwood Floor Installation has the moisture rules and the overall installed price range.
